The Metropolitan Airports Commission collects flight tracking data and publishes them for public use and viewing. The data provided are for information purposes only. Using this tool will allow you to view aircraft arrival and departure activity within a 40-mile radius of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).
To get started, follow these steps:
There are three options for viewing flight tracking information. Choose from Static Flights, Animated Flight Track Replay, or Near Real Time Tracks. You may select one type of flight track information at a time. A description of each display is provided below.
At the top of the map, a "Find an Address" bar is provided so that you may locate a particular address or point on the map. In this bar, type the address number, then street name, and zipcode if you know it. Then click on the magnifying glass button or hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard. The location will appear on the map as a red graphic.
When you are interested in viewing aircraft activity for a specific date and time, click on the calendar button near the top left corner of the map. The electronic calendar will open and display the current month and year, but you may select any month of interest by clicking the arrows on the top of the calendar, and then clicking on the date of the activity you would like to view. You may select the "Start Time" of the activity you would like to view when you click on the down arrow button next to the Start Time block. Select the length of time you would like to view by clicking on the down arrow next to the "Length" block. When the date, start time and length details are completed, click the REFRESH TRACKS button.
For times when you would like to measure distances or areas on the map, a "Measure" tool is provided in the upper right corner of the map. When you click the down arrow next to the measure tool you can select "Area" or "Distance." Then click the measure tool button, click on the point on the map where you would like to begin your measurement, move your mouse cursor to the end point of your measurement and double-click. A pop-up window will appear on the map that displays the measurement numeric value. To clear the measurement, click on the "Clear Measurement" button in the pop-up window.
There are various map layer choices to display. Click on the "Map Layers" button on the upper right side of the map to view and select your desired choices.
When you want to display information about any flight track displayed, click on the flight track, then click on the "Flight Information" button located on the right side of the map. A pop-up window will display the flight information that is available for that operation, including the flight identification, aircraft type, associated noise measurement, etc. To close the flight information pop-up window click on the "x" in the upper right corner of the pop-up window.
If you are interested in viewing only specific types of flight activity, filtering the information that is displayed will be helpful. Click on the "Filter Flights" button on the right side of the map. A filter pop-up window will appear with a list of data fields and check-boxes. Click on the check-box to select or unselect each field as it applies to the data you would like to view. When you are ready to view the filtered flight activity, click the APPLY SETTINGS button on the lower right side of the filter pop-up window. To close the filter pop-up window, click on the "x" in the upper right corner of the filter pop-up window.
The bottom of the map will display the current zoom level, cursor coordinates and map scale.
